Catholics must oppose civil unions, Italian bishops say

Rome, Mar. 28, 2007 (CWNews.com) – The Italian bishops’ conference has released a statement saying that a bid for legal recognition of civil unions is "unacceptable in principle, and presents a social and educational danger."

The bishops’ statement, released on May 28, said that it would be "incomprehensible" for a Catholic politician to cast a vote in favor of the civil-union proposal.

Although the bishops did not suggest any disciplinary action against lawmakers who support the government’s proposal, the statement said that every Catholic politician has "the moral duty to express his disagreement clearly and publicly," and to vote against any bill that would grant legal recognition to same-sex unions.

"Marriage is unique," the bishops explain, and fruitful union of a man and woman bound in matrimony deserves society’s protection and support. It would be dangerous to undermine marriage, the bishops argue, and "even more dangerous" to give equal legal status to homosexual unions.

"No politician who claims to be Catholic can appeal to the principle of pluralism and to secular autonomy in politics, favoring solutions that compromise the safeguard of the common good of society," the bishops said.
