European Vacation


Back at the end of April I wrote a short article about the thought of George Bush becoming Catholic. It intrigued me to think of the religious dialog it would create in the US. Yesterday during lunch I had sometime to get caught up on current events and saw an article headline saying “Bush to Visit Pope in June”.
Evidently the President will be taking a European vacation in June and Vatican City is on his list of stops. The article didn’t say that Bush would be meeting with the Pope but the headline suggested it, and would a US President really visit the Vatican without meeting the Pope?

I’m not sure there is much more today say but there certainly is a lot that one can wonder about. Let us again say a quick prayer for the conversion of all non-Catholics to the One Holy Catholic & Apostolic Church.

Almighty and eternal God, it is Your desire that all men might be saved and come to the knowledge of truth. Grant in Your mercy that all mankind enter into union with you and your Catholic Church through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Prayer for Priests


Today May 30th is “World Day of Prayer for the Sanctification of Priests”. Today we are asked to pray for our Priests and may we also pray for more Priests. Read More Here

Lord Jesus, present in the Most Blessed Sacrament,
and living perpetually among us through Your Priests,
grant that the words of Your Priests may be only Your words,
that their gestures be only Your gestures,
and that their lives be a true reflection of Your life.

Grant that they may be men who speak to God on behalf of His people,
and speak to His people of God.
Grant that they be courageous in service,
serving the Church as she asks to be served.

Grand that they may be men who witness to eternity in our time,
traveling on the paths of history in Your steps,
and doing good for all.

Grant that they may be faithful to their commitments,
zealous in their vocation and mission,
clear mirrors of their own identity,
and living the joy of the gift they have received.

We pray that Your Holy Mother, Mary,
present throughout Your life,
may be ever present in the life of Your Priests.
Amen

Be a Witness


So today as I’m scrambling to find something for Witness Wednesday as I’m already hours late from my usual morning posting for Wednesdays. So at lunch I’m searching Google with the words Catholic Witness. Assuming I’ll find something on a saint that I can copy and paste quickly, while giving proper credit to the source of course, I instead find the 4th and 5th Google search returns to be entitled “How to Witness to a Catholic”. So I thought I’d check out what was written on eHow.com  (by the way I encourage anyone who reads this to take a moment and witness to eHow article’s author)

The article appears to be written with charity and has some really important points that we as Catholics need to consider when witnessing our Catholic faith to others.

1. Understanding – try to understand where the other person is coming from by putting yourself in their shoes gain understanding of what they believe and why they believe it.
2. Knowledge – we need to have sound doctrine or else we could lead someone astray. I agree 100% although I would refer someone to www.vatican.va for sound doctrine verses a church in Littlerock, CA. We also need to have a clear understanding of this doctrine. Or else as perfectly demonstrated by the author’s article we could unintentionally lead someone astray.
3. Approach with Love – this one is especially difficult at times with those who are closest to us. I am a prime example of someone who will witness to strangers with more love than I do with some of my own family members who have left the Catholic faith.
4. Prepare with Pray – another great piece of advice which admittedly I faith at on numerous occasions. I can not convert anyone only the Holy Spirit can convert souls to the Catholic Church.

So with that said let us pray.

Dear Lord help me to be a witness to your love for us. Help me to approach others with understanding, knowledge, love, and prayer. Let me speak your truth through my words and actions so that all can see Your truth and beauty in the One Holy Catholic Church. Amen.

Memorial Day Weekend


I apologize for not posting more this week. I’ve been very busy with work and home life. I pray for safe travel for all of you on the road this holiday weekend.

Memorial Day weekend seems to be one of those holidays where Americans have come to ignore its original purpose. Even in a time of war the vast majority of Americans freely discuss the freedoms they plan to enjoy this weekend verses any talk of honoring those who have given their lives for those freedoms.

With that said I ask those who read this to offer a prayer in thanksgiving and to offer your Mass intentions this weekend for those who have lost their lives protecting our country helping to preserve our freedoms that we all take for granted on a daily basis.

Dear Lord Jesus bless all those who have lost their lives protecting me. Grant Your mercy upon them so that they may live with You in your heavenly kingdom for eternity. Amen.

Witness Wednesday


My buddy T has something for us again this Wednesday.

I have a new future friend, as of now he is a new acquaintance. This gentleman is as gracious, friendly and courteous as any of my now friends. The difference is he is committed to a wheel chair to traverse his existence here on earth. It wasn’t long ago I knew him only by sight but through a blessing I have started to come to know him and learn that we have quite a few things in common. The other day, in his presence, I was performing what is a very easy task for me on most days. Standing and kneeling. It embarrassed me as I thought how much I take for granted, with my new acquaintance not getting the pleasure of either or even the pleasure of taking it for granted. On most days I’ll admit, I cheat when I’m kneeling. I’ll either lean forward as I sit in the pew or lean back against the pew for some relief. I decided I’m never going to do that again. I will kneel with dedication and pride. Why? Because I should be kneeling out of respect for what is happening in the service, but also I will do it because my new acquaintance (friend) can’t and I want to do it for him. The best thought I had this week. Our time here is short. We all have our crosses. He carries his admirably, with grace. One day, after this new acquaintance and I become FRIENDS, I will not only be able to kneel with him in front of our Lord, but walk and even run with him. Now that’s something to look forward to.  AMEN

My Favorite Non-Catholic Ministry


Dave Ramsey runs one of my favorite Non-Catholic ministries. As someone who spent much of their 20s over extending himself by drinking, gambling, “investing”, and trip taking Dave Ramsey and his biblical approach to money was an earthly savior to my finances. I took Dave’s Total Money Makeover class in May of 2007. With the help of Dave, and my wife, I have said goodbye to credit cards and hello to cash, and my life feels a whole lot better. Dave has nothing earth shattering to say but he has a skill of making common sense, make sense. His tagline on his daily radio show is “You’ll never have financial peace until you know the Prince Of Peace”. Take a listen sometime.

In the past 50 years living with debt for the common citizen in the United States has gone from rare to the norm. Credit card companies have pushed their product on all the world and have virtually enslaved the masses. Dave pushes the bible versus Proverbs 22:7 that says “the borrower is slave to the lender” on a regular basis to get his point across. I remember in my 20’s I thought it was cool that I had more than $100,000 available to me through credit cards and I’m embarrassed to say how much I actually used. I was just as Proverbs points out “enslaved to the lender”.

Thankfully those days are over and I have seen the light. No more Credit Cards for me. No more monthly payments. No more buying today and figuring out how to pay later. I pray that others see the light and look at leading a debt free life.

Father Almighty, help us to use your money wisely. Help us to live our lives without wanting anything but your grace. May you bless us with abundance and may we share the fruits we receive from you freely with our neighbor.

You can evangelize with bumper stickers or you can use your license plate. People are always asking what John 6:54 says? A personalized plate in the state of Kansas costs about $45 and takes 6 to 8 weeks to get.

Ignoring God


Something I thought about while I was traveling this last week. Maybe its not the best way to start off the week but I have to get it off my chest.

Many in the world appear to lead their whole lives only worrying about becoming healthy, wealthy, and wise in various orders. Each day God appears to be ignored by the vast majority of our world. Faith in God has been relegated to a “private matter” and we are coerced into think that we will offend someone if we mention Him, God forbid. Somehow discussing God is no longer polite and we are to keep our mouths shut if we are to go along & get along with today’s world.

Then when someone dies secular conventional wisdom says that God will let them into Heaven because they were “a good person” never mind the fact that they spent no glorifying Him, praising Him, or speaking about Him.

Hello???? Is no one willing to point out the elephant in the room? All dogs may go to heaven, but all people don’t. We must strive to live by God’s commandments. We must repent our sins. We must utilize the sacraments Christ gave us. We must be open to God and give Him a freaking chance to be in our lives. Do we truly keep the Sabbath Holy or do we show up at church as though we are punching a time clock and then leave early only spend the rest our day and week as though we were only created for this world and the flesh? Do we truly worship God or do we create idols out of our sports, hobbies, jobs, fashion, and vacations?

Are we truly a Christian or do we just play one in real life?

Lord Jesus help me to lead the life you want me to live. Let me be willing to share your Good News with everyone. Amen

Mother's Day


God Bless all Mothers today. I feel God has blessed me with three mothers.

  1. My Mother
  2. His Mother
  3. & Mother Angelica

While on my trip this last week I was able to finish two books that I am happy to recommend. The first is Pope Benedict XVI’s “Jesus of Nazareth” & the other is Raymond Arroyo’s second book “Mother Angelica’s Little Book of Life Lessons and Everyday Spirituality”.

I recommend both books but prefer Mother Angelica’s. In my faith journey Mother Angelica has been very important to me. Her television network, EWTN, has helped feed me spiritually during the week between Sundays. I can relate so easily to her words of wisdom and feel she is a living Saint. Catholic orthodoxy in America owes Mother Angelica a debt of gratitude in my opinion.
