Catholic Blogs & Videos

Writing a post everyday is a bit of an undertaking but as long as God gives me ideas and time I’ll try and do my best to write something with some meat to it. If you’ve taken the time to come to the website I can at least try and make sure there is something decent for you to read or experience.

But sometimes reading leaves something more to be desired. I know I love to see and hear things as well as read them. And it appears there is a new place on the web that is a Catholic based You-Tube. http://www.catholic-tube.com/

In addition I thought I would introduce you to some of the websites I frequent and are listed in no particular order:

Other suggested sites:
http://www.usccb.org/nab/bible
http://www.catholicscomehome.org/ (some great videos)
http://www.ewtn.com

And there are many more… http://catholicblogs.blogspot.com/ 1500+ and counting.

I might suggest that if you know some fallen away Catholics that you send them an email with the www.CatholicsComeHome.org link and get their opinions on the videos that offer especially the “Epic” video. Ask them open ended for their opinion. Everyone has one of those. You never know what type of seed you might plant with such a suggestion.

The Church Must Be One

As we look at the body of Christ these days we mainly see division. We see division in faith, in belief, in worship, and in Christian love. Much of the world has decided to become its own Pope determining on their own, sometimes with a little guidance, what they will believe and how they will worship God mainly because its suits themselves verses suiting the God they worship.

John 10:16 “and there shall be one flock, and one Shepard”

1 Corinthians 1:10 “I urge you, brother, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all of you agree in what you say, and that there be no divisions among you, but that you be united in the same mind and in the same purpose”

Philemon 2:2 “complete my joy by being of the same mind, with the same love, united in heart, thinking one thing”

Romans 15:5 “May the God of endurance and encouragement grant you to think in harmony with one another, in keeping with Jesus Christ”

John 17:21-22 “…so that they may all be one, as you, Father, are in me and I in you, that they also may be in us, that the world might believe that you sent me. And I have given them the glory you gave me, so that they may be one, as we are one”

1 Corinthians 12:13 “For in one spirit we were all baptized into one body…”

Ephesians 4:5 “one Lord, one faith, one baptism”

St. Cyprian 250 AD – Unity of the Church 23 “God is one and Christ is one, and one is His Church, and the faith is one”

We must not try to make the world believe as we do, we must teach the world to believe as Christ taught. We must follow the faith Christ gave to His Apostles who safeguarded it within Christ’s one Holy Catholic and Apostolic Church, which Christ built upon His rock St. Peter. We must trust in the words of Christ that the gates of the netherworld shall not prevail against it.

We must preach the gospel, the whole gospel, to our families, friends, neighbors, co-workers, and to the world through our words and equally in our actions.

Oh Jesus Christ our Lord & Savior may we your adopted brothers and sisters be one as you and our heavenly Father are one. May You give Your people the grace to see Your presence in the Eucharist and in your Holy Catholic Church. Amen.

White Noise, Dark Affect

These days everyone’s lives are surrounded by constant noise or what many call “white noise”. We have it at home when the TV is on, or the car when radio is on, it’s in the waiting room at the doctor’s office, and many times it’s even pumped into elevators. Take a look at your day and consider how often you are awake and are in total or near total silence. I would bet that it’s very rare and if you have kids silence is probably extinct in your life. White noise has become a constant distraction in our lives, and I now believe it to be a strategic move in the spiritual warfare for our souls that has an origin of none other than evil one himself.

My reasons for this conclusion is that when we are distracted by noise we do not pray, we do not think of God, and we do not take time to examine our lives or our conscience. The devil is trying to jam our communication channel like any competent combatant. When there is noise we do not think, we act, we just move on to the next task and do it.

Have you ever noticed when you are in the car and you are trying to focus on finding a new destination that you know is nearby what you do? You turn down the car radio. Why is that? Does a quite radio really help you in finding your destination? I’m pretty sure it does otherwise we wouldn’t do it.

I remember one Lent when I was trying to determine what to give up I decided to give up using the car radio when I was alone in the car. I would categorize it under self-sacrifice, a 20th century mortification if you will.

IT WAS ONE OF THE MOST DIFFICULT THINGS I’VE EVER TRIED TO DO. The silence was excruciating and it literally became painful. In hindsight a number of years later I can discern that at the time I couldn’t be alone with my conscience. When you are driving around in silence the only thing you hear after a bit is your own conscience, and I couldn’t handle it, even for the short 10 and 15 minute drives to and from work.

After about a two weeks I knew that I had to make a change in my Lenten plans if I was to stay sane. I decided to buy the Bible on CDs and listen to those when I was alone in the car, it was probably one of the best compromises that I have ever come up with. Listening to the Bible was great, although listen to the Book of Leviticus can be a bit tedious, so many laws, but I digress. I was able to listen to the entire Bible that Lent.

By listening to the Word of God that Lent I was able to give myself a reprieve from my conscience until I was better prepared to deal with it. Reconciliation can work wonders for a man. Thankfully God knows how to work with each of us if we just give him the chance. Giving up the white noise in my car that Lent was an opening that I gave Him, and He has since worked miracles in my life.

When you turn off the white noise in your life you tend to have more conversations that you wouldn’t have otherwise with your spouse, your kids, yourself, and with God. We are built for communication and communion with each other but the white noise drowns out the opportunities and sometimes our desire for this communion with others. The white noise can condition us into thinking that communication is only one-way experience.

We spend much of our day listening to the radio and TV and then when, and if, we do pray we do anything but listen, instead most of us usually just petition. Communication and communion with God and others is a two way street. The only way for us to hear God is to turn of the white noise, focus, and listen. If we take the time to listen for Him in the silence, we will hear Him.

Dear Lord God Almighty, help me to be silent and to hear your call. May I answer you joyfully do your will. Amen.

Get A Summer Son Tan

I remember every summer as a kid I would spend hours at the pool almost every day of the week. Every year I got a great suntan and my skin would turn an awesome shade of dark brown. As I grew older into my teen years I even worked on getting the best tan I could. I didn’t fear skin cancer or sun burns and I knew what tanning oil worked best with my skin, Hawaiian Tropic. I also loved the smell of that deep rich coconut oil permeating from my skin. It was basically my summer cologne as a teenager.

1 Corinthians 13:11 “When I was a child, I used to talk as a child, think as a child, reason as a child; when I became a man, I put aside childish things”

These days I now know working on getting a suntan is a childish thing. I would now consider it outright vain to spend hours in the sun each day for the sole purpose of getting a good tan. If you’re on vacation then fine but otherwise I think you need to work on getting your priorities in proper order.

I gave up sun tanning about the time I went to college and these days I prefer to focus on my Son tan. The best hour of my week is spent in Eucharistic Adoration. Instead of watching my skin darken I can sense my soul lighten the more I’m in adoration. Many people wonder about what it would have been like to hang out with Jesus back when he was walking the earth and preaching the gospel. My response is why wonder; just go hang out with him now. He is here in the flesh in the Eucharist, in your parish Tabernacle or Adoration Chapel. Give Jesus some one on one time with Him in the flesh and He will change your life. Even if all you do is sit before Him and ponder His presence he will shine graces upon you beyond your comprehension.

So this summer forget worrying about your suntan and start working on your Son tan.

Lord Jesus, help me to see you in the flesh in the Holy Eucharist. Amen

Excommunicated & Anathema

Remember when your grandparents spoke about the good ole days.  I’m not sure if this is an example of the good ole days or not but per the movie scene things were a bit more clear and done with flare.  From the movie “Becket”

Penance First, Communion Second

Fr. William Casey discusses our need for Penance before we receive the Body & Blood of Christ in the Eucharist.
