Get Ready For the Rumble Down Under

The World Youth Day event starts next week in Sydney Australia. Australia is a interesting country that I’ve had the pleasure of visiting. The only way I can describe the place is that it’s America with a twist.

When the Pope came to America a few months ago he appeared to be warmly welcomed by not only the nation but also by our media. As much as the media likes to jab at the Catholic Church with biased and uninformed reporting the American media seemed to revert to a fascination with the Pope once the Roman Pontiff finally arrived.

I wonder if the same will be true for the Australian media? At this point, a week from Benedict’s arrival, the Australian media can’t seem to produce enough stories about papal protests or labor strikes that are to occur next week. If I hadn’t visited Australia I would think that whole nation is made up of gays and lesbians from the reporting.

The Australian media seems to be trying to building up a “Rumble, Down Under” as if they want to show riots in the streets. And if such events happen the media will be sure to place blame on the Vicar of Christ. I’m pretty sure God has other plans.

Gays to protest at Pope’s arrival
The Sydney Morning Herald
July 8, 2008 – 9:05PM

(AAP) – Gay and lesbian Christians will protest the Pope’s condemnation of homosexuality ahead of World Youth Day, labeling his beliefs as right-wing propaganda. [Do they really think the Pope cannot affirm 2000+ years of teaching on homosexuality and since when did believing homosexual acts as being wrong become right wing?]

The protest, calling for equality [equality? The Church teaches we are all equal before God, God loves us all equality. They are equal, their actions are not.] for gay and lesbian followers, will take place at the Pitt Street Uniting Church this Sunday, coinciding with Pope Benedict XVI’s arrival in Sydney.

Catholic writer [I question how "Catholic" he is] and educator Michael Kelly said gay and lesbian people had been marginalised and condemned by mainstream churches, particularly the Catholic Church. [Homosexual acts are to be condemned, we are to hate the sin and love the sinner which we don’t always do, but one cannot accept mortal sin as normal or okay, if we do the devil has done his job]

He labeled the “version of Christianity that is coming to Sydney” as propaganda. [don’t you love one sided articles]

“We call on gay and lesbian Christians … to join us in standing up for the goodness of being gay, and not allow right-wing [believing homosexuality is wrong is now right wing didn’t you know] religious propaganda to silence our faith, hope and love,” he said. [seems to me there is no silence on this issue, I certainly can’t keep them from talking]

Reverend Dorothy McRae-McMahon said churches were happy to benefit from the hard work of gay followers, but demonized them in public. [So I guess the Church should never correct its followers when they are doing wrong and we should all just come together and sing kumbaya every Sunday]

“We need to claim our place and give witness to the grace of God in our lives as lesbian and gay people,” she said. [God is in your lives for sure but he is not in homosexual acts]

“The churches are happy to use our gifts and our hard work [an example of an all about us mentality] – it’s time we celebrated all the richness and wisdom that we have offered the Christian community [PRIDE], and show that the negative messages about us are based on fear and ignorance.” [that’s it I must be ignorant for following God’s teachings]

Pope Benedict is due to land at Richmond air base on Sunday before being whisked [as if he’s hiding from the protesters] off to the Kenthurst Study Centre for some relaxation [he’s going to need some relaxation if he’s spending a week anywhere near these people] ahead of his first official engagement for the Catholic World Youth Day event.

Dear Lord Jesus we pray for Pope Benedicts Health & Safety. We pray that your truth may be spoken and heard by all those in Australia and around the world. Amen

With an election coming up this year we all need to properly form our conscience before we head to the voting both.

The Catholic Church knows whats its talking about when it comes to contraception.

Its been a while since I’ved listened to the Cardinal Arinze podcast but I came across this video clip the other day and it is pertinate to the posts I’ve had on the reception of holy communion. I’ve always been a big fan of Cardinal Arinze. He always speaks with authority based on truth. Back in 2005 I was wondering if the Holy Spirit would select him as the next Vicar of Christ.

Independence Day

I hope everyone has a great 4th of July. Today we celebrate our Declaration of Independence as a nation. I thought it might make sense to take a look at the first few lines of a document that became the foundation of our nation.

IN CONGRESS, JULY 4, 1776
The unanimous Declaration of the thirteen united States of America
[Is there anything that we could be unanimous about these days as a nation? What a difference 232 years makes.]

When in the Course of human events it becomes necessary for one people to dissolve the political bands which have connected them with another and to assume among the powers of the earth, the separate and equal station to which the Laws of Nature [Do we as nation pay attention to the Laws of Nature any longer? Or do we instead prefer the Laws of Men?] and of Nature’s God entitle them, a decent respect to the opinions of mankind requires that they should declare the causes which impel them to the separation.

We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness. — That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed, [Does our nation still have the consent of the common man or does it have the consent only of the special interest groups?] — That whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government, laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their Safety and Happiness. [How many years until we are forced to abolish it?]

In thinking about our nations birth I wondered just how long our nation can last at its current rate of social change. Historians have documented the stages of great civilizations from their birth to their death. I see no reason why our nation would be any different. I would suggest that the United States of America is possibly as far along as stage 8.

Stage 1 a nation moves from bondage to spiritual faith
Stage 2 a nation moves from spiritual faith to great courage
Stage 3 a nation moves from great courage to liberty
Stage 4 a nation moves from liberty to abundance
Stage 5 a nation moves from abundance to selfishness
Stage 6 a nation moves from selfishness to complacency
Stage 7 a nation moves from complacency to apathy
Stage 8 a nation moves from apathy to moral decay
Stage 9 a nation moves from moral decay to dependence
Stage 10 a nation moves from dependence to bondage

It is said that nations often fall from within and many say “As families go, so goes the nation.” You have no doubt heard our last two Popes express concern for the family in our world today.

In the book Our Dance Has Turned to Death, Carl Wilson identifies the common pattern of family decline in the Greek and the Roman empires. It is scary to consider that our own nation appears to be repeating the history of the previous great empires. I would suggest that our nations is beginning to move into stage 6.

  1. Men cease to lead their families in worship. Spiritual and moral development becomes a secondary concern.
  2. Men selfishly neglect care for their wives and children to pursue material wealth, political and military power, and cultural development. Material values begin to dominate thought, and man begins to exalt his own role as an individual.
  3. There is a change in the sexual values of men. Men become preoccupied with business or war either neglect their wives sexually or became involved with lower-class women or with homosexuality. A double standard of morality is ultimately developed.
  4. The value of the role of women in the home and with children is lost. Women are neglected and their roles devalued. Women revolt to gain access to material wealth and also freedom for sex outside marriage. Women also begin to minimize having sex relations to conceive children, and the emphasis of sex is placed on pleasure. Marriage laws are then changed to make divorce easy.
  5. Husbands and wives compet against each other for money, home leadership, and the affection of their children. This results in hostility, frustration, and possible homosexuality in children. Many marriages ended in separation and divorce. Many children were unwanted, aborted, abandoned, molested, and undisciplined. As children become more undisciplined, social pressure is increased not to have children. The breakdown of the home produces anarchy.
  6. Selfish individualism grows and carries over into society, fragmenting into smaller and smaller group loyalties. The nation is thus weakened by internal conflict. There is a decrease in the birthrate and a larger older population that has a decrease ability to defend itself and less who are willing to do so, making the nation more vulnerable to its enemies.
  7. Finally, unbelief in God becomes more complete, parental authority is diminished, and ethical and moral principles disappear, affecting the economy and government. Thus, by internal weakness and fragmentation the society comes apart. The only way to save them is by a dictator who arises from within or by invaders from outside the nation.

These were the patterns of the Greece and Roman empires although this pattern is surely still relevant. Families are the foundation of our nation. When the family crumbles, a nation falls. A nation will not be strong unless the family is strong. That was true in previous civilizations and it is certainly still true today. So I pose this final question to you “Is it possible for our nation to reverse its course in the stages of a nation or in the stages of the family?”

The answer I come up with is “Only if we rely on God”

Dear God Almighty, forgive us our sins and help us to reverse our ways not just as individuals but as a nation. We ask this in your Son’s name, Jesus Christ Our Lord. Amen

Contraception

In 1965 the Supreme Court case Griswold v. Connecticut the court ruled that the US Constitution protected a right to privacy. The case involved a Connecticut law that prohibited the use of contraceptives. By a vote of 7-2, the Supreme Court invalidated the law on the grounds that it violated the "right to marital privacy". The case was brought forward by our dear friends at Planned Parenthood who’s program director had discussed contraception with a married couple, and got a doctor to prescribed the couple a birth-control device.

The majority of the Court summarized their ruling by saying, "Would we allow the police to search the sacred precincts of marital bedrooms for telltale signs of the use of contraceptives? The very idea is repulsive to the notions of privacy…."

However, Supreme Court Justice Potter Stewart disagreed saying that he could find no "right of privacy" in the Constitution of the United States and wrote in his dissent in the case, "Since 1879 Connecticut has had on its books a law which forbids the use of contraceptives by anyone…. What provision of the Constitution, then, makes this state law invalid? The Court says it is the right of privacy ‘created by several fundamental constitutional guarantees.’

The world was told that contraception would bring;

1. Worry Free Sex without consequences
2. Stabilize Marriages through increased control over family planning
3. Lower the Divorce Rate
4. Prevent Crisis Pregnancy
5. Prevent Child Abuse
6. Reduce Poverty through Population Control
7. Prevent Abortion
8. Protect against Sexually Transmitted Diseases

So what has this landmark decision by the Supreme Court and a contracepting society brought to our country since 1965?

1. The divorce rate has doubled since the ruling
2. Cohabitation has now become acceptable in society
3. Increased single parent homes has gone from 9% to 30% (children living with one parent)
4. Legal abortion came within 8 years of the ruling (after all what are we to do when contraception fails)
5. 60% of Abortions are due to failed contraception
6. Fertility rates have dropped significantly and are now barely above the replacement rate
7. Unmarried households with children have increased from approx 150,000 to 1,800,000
8. 2/3rds of adults disagree with the statement "the main rational for marriage is children"
