From Gerald Warner of the UK Telegraph ~ “There are 47 million Catholic voters in the United States. One quarter of all registered voters are Catholics. At every presidential election in the past 30 years the Catholic vote has gone to the winning candidate, except for Al Gore in 2000. This year 41 per cent of Catholics are independents – up from 30 per cent in 2004.”
Just think 25% of all Catholics make up the total voting population in the United States. If we really voted as a block for Pro-Life candidates only, Roe v Wade would already be overturned. Innocent human life would no longer be murdered at the current rate. One cannot be Catholic and support abortion. One cannot be Catholic and support a pro-abortion candidate. A Catholic can only vote for a pro-abortion candidate if there is not other alternative and if we voted as a block there would always be an alternative. If we voted as a block there would only be Pro-Life candidates.
As you can tell I will not be voting Obama this November and you can probably guess I’m a registered Republican, but I too may join the largest number of register Catholic voters and become independent. The only reason I have stayed Republican to this point is that I want to vote in the primaries for Pro-Life Candidates. As true Catholic’s we should be independent and follow no party, only Church teaching. I do think Church and State should remain separate. It seems to work best that way, but as Catholics we need to follow what the Church teaches authoritatively for the common good of all mankind.
