I’ve been traveling and relaxing and watching the snow fall and build up, and up, and up. I traveled home to Nebraska for the Christmas holiday leaving a day early to avoid blizzarding weather. We stopped in Nebraska City for lunch at Runza one of my all time favorite foods. A Runza is a basically a kinda of bread and meat hot pocket with cabbage and spices. It tastes way better than it sounds and I highly suggest you try one if you get the chance.

While at Runza on Christmas Eve for lunch they had a local country station playing in the background during one of the news breaks they started listing all the local church services that were being cancelled due to the weather. Living my whole life in areas that can have inclement weather school and church cancellations are somewhat common place. Much more so today than when I was a kid. When we finally made it to my parents house more church cancellations were rolling across the bottom of the TV screen during my annual viewing of the movie “It’s A Wonderful Life”, my favorite movie.

A curious thing about all the church service cancellations. They were all protestant churches, none where Catholic. Isn’t that an interesting phenomenom? Is it because Catholic Priests live on the parish grounds? That can’t be it as many protestant pastors also live on location at their church. So why is it that Catholic’s don’t cancel their “services” in inclement weather and protestants do?

Well here is my answer, the Catholic Mass isn’t about the congregation whereas a protestant church service is, or at least it’s about the pastor preaching to that congregation. They may be worshiping God, but that can be done from home and without the congregation gathered. Whereas a Catholic Mass isn’t about us, the congreation, it’s about Him, God, and He’ll be there whether we are or not.

Over the weekend Patrick Kennedy, a Congressman from Rhode Island and son of Ted Kennedy, made public that he had been requested by his Bishop, Thomas Tobin, to refrain from receiving Holy Communion, the body and blood of our Lord Jesus Christ, due to his stance on abortion which is directly opposed to the teaching of the Catholic Church. The recent public feud has been in the news for a few weeks now after Kennedy attacked the church for the Bishop’s view of the House Healthcare bill but the issues of receiving communion had not been brought up until now. While the Bishops support healthcare reform and have for some time they could not support the bill as it was originally written due to its funding of abortion with taxpayer dollars. Bishop Tobin publically rebuked Congressman Kennedy for his comments, but stopped short of mentioning his prior request of Kennedy back in 2007 to refrain from receiving communion. It was just a week ago that Kennedy had mentioned he would no longer discuss his faith publically and yet he brought this fact out to the press over the weekend. Just think if such a rebuke had happened with his father Ted Kennedy back in the 70s. How many abortions could have been avoided had clear and firm Catholic teaching been made public back when Patrick’s farther started going down this same path. Personally I think it would have stopped people like Nancy Pelosi from even being in office.

It is good that Kennedy had been instructed not to receive the communion for his own soul and I think it’s even better that this information is now public. The Catholic Church will continue to have the issue of Catholic politicians supporting abortion while claiming they are Catholic as long as there are no public repercussions. It is absolute scandal for abortion supporting Catholics to appear to the public as though they are Catholic’s in good standing even with their pro-abortion voting record. They consistently claim they are personally opposed to abortion but need to represent the views of their constituents. As long as this dance with the devil is allowed to happen publically pro-abortion Catholic politicians will exist in Congress. It’s time for Catholic Bishops to stand up and do their jobs, and to do them publically, when it comes to rebuking pro-abortion Catholic politicians. The faithful need to know pro-abortion Catholics are not Catholics in good standing, and that his viewpoint risks one’s salvation.

You know after a few days of not writing it is hard to get back into the swing of writing. So I thought I might start things out again by putting up a video of a seminary in Pakistan. Fr. Ben who is the rector at the seminary has come to our parish each of the last 3 summers. He is a very humble man who risks his life every day to spread the word of God not just by being a Catholic Priest in Pakistan, but by helping to educate future Catholic Priests. Last year he had 9 seminarians. This year he has 20 and had to turn away a few due to space in the existing seminary. Please view the video and consider helping Fr. Ben build a new seminary in Pakistan. We all wonder how we can combat terrorism outside of prayer. I believe supporting Fr. Ben and the St. Pius X Minor Seminary is a great option.
